North Island, New Zealand Road Trip Ideas

1. Auckland to Bay of island to Cape Reinga (North End)

Distance: 418 km approx.

With a 5-and-a-half hour drive, you can either knock this over in one day, or make a stop on the way to break it up. Paihia in the Bay of Islands makes the perfect place to stop for the night, where you can go on one of their many cruises and check out the other islands for the day, or even enjoy a spot of dolphin watching.

2. Auckland to Wellington via taupo

Distance: 650Km approx.

This one is a bit more of a journey, but you’ll love it. With almost 8 hours travel time, it’s best to break it up over two days. Taupo makes the perfect place to stop for the night and enjoy some of the outdoor sports on offer. From fishing to jet boating, rafting, skydiving and plenty more.

3. Auckland to Rotorua via Hamilton

Distance: 230 km approx.

If you feel like breaking up the 3-hour trip, then consider stopping off at Hamilton on the way. You can get outdoors, so head to one of their amazing Hamilton gardens. When you arrive in Rotorua check out the geothermal pools: the best way to explore is from the air, where you can head over Lake Rotoiti and have a soak in the secluded hot pools. Explore our Maori culture and learn about their myths and legends at New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute. Finish up with a mud bath at one of the traditional sulphur spa’s.
